Summer Glow vs. Sun Damage

A Quick Guide for Melanin-Rich Skin

There’s a fine line between that radiant sun-kissed glow and the beginnings of sun damage. While we all love a lit-from-within look, too much sun can leave your skin vulnerable — even if you don’t see the usual signs of burning.

For those of us with melanin-rich skin, sun damage doesn't always look like redness or peeling.

Here's how to tell the difference between glowing and overexposed, how to care for your skin in the heat and what to do if you've already had a little too much sun.

What a Healthy Summer Glow Looks Like

  • Skin feels soft, hydrated and smooth

  • Complexion has a warm, even tone

  • No tightness, flaking or irritation

  • A natural radiance without dullness or discomfort

☀️ Reminder: A true glow comes from healthy skin — not sun damage. Staying hydrated, using gentle exfoliation and maintaining a consistent skincare routine all play a role.

Sun Damage Doesn’t Always Look Like a Burn (Especially on Melanin-Rich Skin)

We don't always burn visibly but that doesn't mean the sun didn't take a toll. Common signs of overexposure in melanin-rich skin include:

  • Skin that feels hot, tight or overly sensitive

  • Uneven patches or dark spots that appear days later

  • Dull, ashy tone that doesn’t improve with moisturizer

  • Rough texture or tiny bumps

  • Flare-ups of hyperpigmentation flare-ups in areas like the cheeks, upper lip, or forehead

Even subtle exposure can lead to inflammation, dryness and increased melanin activity which may show up as discoloration weeks later.

Why Sun Protection Still Matters for Melanated Skin

Yes, melanin offers some natural protection (about and SPF of 13). But that's not enough to fully prevent long-term damage. UV rays can still trigger:

  • Premature aging

  • Discoloration and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

  • Collagen breakdown

  • Increased sensitivity or flare-ups of existing skin conditions (like melasma or acne)

Even if your skin doesn't burn easily, daily protection is a must to keep your glow safely.

How to Protect Your Skin While in the Sun

Here's how to enjoy the sunshine without compromising your skin:

Apply sunscreen daily

Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on all exposed skin. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors or after swimming/sweating. (We'll cover SPF types in an upcoming post)

Wear protective gear

Think wide-brim hats, oversized sunglasses and breathable long sleeves. These help block both UV rays and heat exposure.

Seek shade, especially midday

The sun is strongest between 10AM and 4PM. Try to stay under umbrellas, trees or shaded areas when possible.

Stay hydrated

Water helps your skin recover from heat exposure and keeps your barrier healthy.

Don't forget "hidden" areas

Ears, neck, lips, chest and hands are often missed but they're just as vulnerable.

If You've Had Too Much Sun: What to Do

Early care can help prevent peeling, dryness and post-summer dark spots.

1. Cool and calm

Use a cool (not cold) compress, a soothing mist, or aloe-based gel to reduce heat and inflammation. Avoid anything harsh or heavily fragranced.

2. Pause the actives

Skip retinol, acids, and exfoliants until your skin feels calm again. Choose barrier-supporting, calming ingredients like:

  • Aloe Vera

  • Centella asiatica

  • Panthenol (Vitamin B5)

  • Green tea extract

  • Hyaluronic acid

3. Rehydrate

Use lightweight hydrators and a rich moisturizer to restore balance. And drink plenty of water!

4. Sun protection is non-negotiable

Even irritated skin still needs protection - choose a gentle, fragrance-free sunscreen to keep damage from getting worse.

5. Be patient with pigmentation

Once your skin is calm, slowly introduce ingredients like niacinamide, licorice root, or tranexamic acid to help fade dark spots.

What If You’re Already Seeing Peeling or Pigment?

Don’t panic — healing takes time. The goal is to support healing, not speed it up by scrubbing or overcorrecting.

✅ Avoid picking or scrubbing

✅ Use barrier-repair moisturizers
